I think it is a personal choice. When I started, I had around 4-5 companies to which I contributed regularly and built up my positions. When I had around $1000 in each company, I looked to purchase additional companies. That being said, I now own 30 companies and am not looking to add more. As for holding enough shares to purchase a single share through the DRIP, that could be awhile depending on your contributions. I have owned BNS for 12 years and will finally buy a full share with my next quarterly DRIP.
