JNJ Dividends Extend to 64 Years as Yield Sits at 2.09%

  • JNJ dividends total $5.36 annually per share, producing a forward yield of about 2.09% at a share price near $256.35.
  • Johnson & Johnson’s 64-year dividend increase streak remains supported by earnings, cash generation and a roughly 60% payout ratio.
  • Oncology growth supports the long-term income case, but shares trade near the top of their 52-week range at roughly 29.8 times trailing earnings.

Dividend Snapshot

JNJ’s $1.34 quarterly dividend and 64-year increase streak put it firmly in the Dividend King category. At a share price near $256.35, the annualized dividend is $5.36 per share, producing a forward yield of about 2.09%.

That yield is above the cited S&P 500 average of 1.70%, but remains below JNJ’s five-year average yield of 2.72%. In practical terms, 100 shares would generate about $536 in annual dividend income before taxes, assuming the current rate holds.

The next ex-dividend date is August 25, with payment scheduled for September 8. Investors must own shares before the ex-dividend date to receive this payment, but should not buy solely to capture a dividend because the share price normally adjusts downward by roughly the dividend amount.

Payout Safety

JNJ’s dividend consumes roughly 60% of earnings, a manageable level for a mature healthcare leader but not an unusually wide cushion. Reported net margin is 21.48%, return on equity is 25.74%, and debt-to-capital stands at 0.31.

Dividend growth has slowed into a more measured range. The latest increase was 3.1%, while payment-based dividend growth averaged 4.38% over one year and 5.08% over five years.

Oncology Drives Long-Term Dividend Outlook

First-quarter revenue rose 9.9% to $24.06 billion, aided by oncology products including DARZALEX and fast-growing CARVYKTI. Management has also targeted at least $50 billion in oncology revenue by 2030, up from roughly $30 billion today.

Rising pharmaceutical earnings can fund future JNJ dividend increases and offset pressure from STELARA biosimilars. Investors should also watch MedTech growth, the planned Orthopaedics separation and legal expenses.

JNJ recorded $330 million in first-quarter litigation charges, underscoring that its defensive profile is not risk-free.

Valuation Limits Yield Appeal

Shares are up sharply in 2026 and trade near the upper end of their $166.64 to $274.90 52-week range. At roughly 29.8 times trailing earnings, the stock looks expensive relative to its moderate yield and mid-single-digit dividend-growth pace.

For existing holders, JNJ remains a reasonable core income holding because of its dividend durability, healthcare exposure and oncology pipeline. For new investors, a pullback that lifts the yield closer to its historical average could offer a better long-term entry point.
